I’ve seen plenty of dog videos, but watching a Labrador drop into a real wave is different. On Sunday, Del Mar Dog Beach was full of them.
The 21st Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon brought out more than 60 dogs, and the ocean did not cooperate.
Big Swells, Short Day
Recent Pacific storms pushed stronger swells than organizers expected. The waves got rough enough that the event wrapped up early.
Even so, about 1,500 people showed up, and the day raised more than $20,000 for Helen Woodward Animal Center.
Not a Cuteness Contest
Dogs compete in 10-minute heats sorted by weight class, so a Chihuahua never faces a Great Dane. Winners from each class move on to the Best in Surf final.
Judges score ride length, wave size, whether the dog caught the critical part of the wave, and maneuvers. As Fox 5 San Diego reported from the beach, dogs also compete solo, with their owners, or several to a board.
The Safety Part Nobody Covers
Every competing dog wears a life vest. This year organizers also limited water access to three-person teams: a handler, a flagger, and a retriever.
If you’re thinking of trying this on your own beach, know the real risk isn’t only drowning. Too much saltwater can throw off a dog’s sodium levels and cause tremors or seizures.
Hydrate your dog before you go, bring fresh water, and rinse the salt off after. Watch for heavy panting, that’s exhaustion, not excitement.
