Boomer has been missing from a Windham neighborhood since September 25. His owner has not had a single confirmed sighting in more than a week.

A drone team is now involved. The search is still active.

What Is Known

Boomer is an 8-year-old brown Lab-pit mix weighing about 90 pounds. He was last seen on Vance Drive in Windham, Maine, between 5 and 6 p.m. on September 25.

He was not wearing a collar or any identifying gear when he disappeared.

How the Search Has Expanded

As WMTW reported on Boomer’s disappearance, a New Hampshire-based drone team, 2A TAC Air OPS Drone Services, has joined the search using thermal imaging technology. Volunteers from Saving Grace Dog Rescue also participated in the initial search.

Saving Grace Dog Rescue was founded by the owner of 2A TAC Air OPS Drone Services, so both teams arriving for Boomer’s search are part of the same New England network dedicated to reuniting missing dogs with their families.

Thermal imaging drones detect body heat from the air, which means they can find a dog hiding in thick woods, under a porch, or in a shed that a ground team would walk right past.

Why He May Not Have Been Spotted

Boomer has no collar. Anyone who sees a large brown dog in the Windham area has no immediate way to connect him to a missing pet report. Without visible identification, neighbors may assume he belongs to someone nearby.

His owner is specifically asking residents to check yards, sheds, and porches. A dog that has been missing for over a week and has not been seen in the open is almost certainly sheltering somewhere rather than roaming.

Boomer’s situation echoes another recent case. Mikey, a German Shepherd from Virginia Beach, ran after a freak accident and had not been found same pattern, same hiding behavior, same community-wide search.

Why Thermal Drones Help After the First Week

A large dog hiding under brush or inside a structure does not show up on a standard visual search. Thermal imaging picks up body heat through vegetation and in low light, which is why these teams are most effective at dawn and dusk when temperatures drop.

According to Missing Animal Response Network’s lost dog behavior guidance, dogs that have been missing for multiple days often become more fearful over time, moving less and hiding more. By day seven, a dog may be within a short distance of where it went missing and still be completely invisible to searchers on foot.

Long searches do sometimes end well. Bear, a golden retriever from Illinois, survived three days near a flooded river after being struck by two cars found because his family and community kept searching past the point most people would have stopped.

That is exactly what makes the drone team’s involvement significant at this stage of the search.

Eight Days. Still No Sighting.

His owner is still looking. The drone team is still flying. Dogs do come home after long absences. Lilly, a Kansas dog, was found as a stray and reunited with her owner five years after going missing. The search is always worth continuing.

If you are in the Windham area and see a large brown dog, that is the call to make.
