Cocker Spaniel Corduroy Missing Since 2019 Is Back With His Family After Showing Up at a Los Angeles Shelter

Seven years is a long time to keep hoping. Most of us would have stopped looking by now. But somewhere in Los Angeles, one family never fully let go, and last month a small Cocker Spaniel walked back into their story.

His name is Corduroy. He went missing in 2019, and he’s finally home.

A Move, a Missing Dog, and Years of Silence

Corduroy disappeared in Los Angeles in 2019, while his family was getting ready to move to San Diego. Moving days are chaotic. Doors stay open and boxes pile up. A dog can slip out in seconds.

LA Animal Services said the loss broke the family’s hearts, especially Samantha’s young daughter, who counted Corduroy as her best friend.

Then came years of not knowing. That’s the hardest part of losing a pet.

How Corduroy Finally Made It Home

Last month, Corduroy turned up at LA Animal Services’ North Central Shelter. Staff did what they do with every animal that comes in. They scanned him for a microchip.

That scan changed everything. The chip led them to his family, and the shelter called them.

They made the drive from San Diego to bring him home. The New York Post covered the reunion, and the shelter described hugs, smiles, and happy tears.

Nobody knows where Corduroy spent those seven years. What matters is that a tiny chip outlasted the gap.

He isn’t the first, either. In Kansas, Lilly was found as a stray and reunited with her owner five years after going missing.

What You Can Do Today

Check your own pet’s setup today.

  • Get the chip. LA City residents can get one at any of the six LA Animal Services centers. It costs $15, and no appointment is needed.
  • Register it. A chip with no owner details is just a number.
  • Update it when life changes. New address or phone number? Change it with the chip company that same week.
  • Keep the collar and tag. A chip doesn’t replace them.
  • Visit shelters in person. Photos don’t always show a scared, matted dog. Check daily. Shelters can surprise you: a Florida woman who saw a viral video of a dog chased across a Naples airport accidentally found him at a shelter.

Why This Matters

Corduroy’s case is rare, but the lesson isn’t. LA Animal Services, citing the American Veterinary Medical Association, says microchipped lost dogs are returned to their owners at more than twice the rate of dogs without chips.

After the January 2025 wildfires, the department reunited hundreds of animals with their families, many thanks to microchip information.

The same source warns that outdated contact details can delay or even block a reunion. So the chip alone isn’t the finish line. The updated record is.

Never Stop Looking

Corduroy’s story is why I never tell anyone to give up on a lost pet. Seven years later, someone scanned him, and a family got their dog back.

Sometimes a lost dog even finds help on his own, like the one who walked up to a Tampa police station and got home thanks to the officers.
